Having seen a steady growth since the beginning of 21st century, Al Wakrah has come a far way from a coastline based economy to a steady international economy. Fishing and related trade used to be the highlight of this region but now with a well connected road network system Al Wakrrrah has diversified its income sources wisely. Earlier a small fishing and pearling village, Al Wakrah has evolved into a small city with a sizable population of around 80,000. It is currently the second largest city in Qatar.

Situated off the Persian Gulf to its east, Al Wakrah is around15 km south of the capital Doha, 72 km south of Al Khor, 21 km north of Mesaieed, and 100 km southeast of Dukhan. Al Wakrah has a strong road network and Karwa Transportation Company has ensured bus routes to all operating from this town.
